The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement categorically refuted that any person appointed by the student had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on a related program broadcast.

The letter criticized the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".

The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in spring.
