United Kingdom Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Warning Roster with Eleven Countries
The UK Foreign Office has included 11 new nations to its official alert list regarding the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
This revised warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Only last month, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to several notable cases including the fatal death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Methanol is a harmful substance often used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.
Official Guidance for Travelers
Foreign Office representative a senior official said that all travellers should know the symptoms of methanol poisoning.
"While having drinks overseas, opt for reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or free shots," Falconer said.
"In case something appears suspicious, like a hangover that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The entire list of nations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
